Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is set to drop on Netflix on October 7, the streamer announced on Monday, sharing a poster of the film on social media.
“The world of Mahito Maki comes to life on October 7, only on Netflix,” wrote the streaming platform on Instagram.
Released theatrically in India on May 10, The Boy and the Heron is inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel of the same name. It follows a 12-year-old boy, Mahito Maki, who finds it difficult to adjust to a new town following his mother's death. But his life changes when he encounters a talking grey heron that informs him that his mother is alive.
The Japanese animated fantasy film bagged the best animated feature award at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024. Its English-dubbed version features voices of Luca Padovan (Mahito Maki), Robert Pattinson (The Gray Heron), Christian Bale (Shoichi Maki), Dave Bautista (The Parakeet King), Gemma Chan (Natsuko), Willem Dafoe (Noble Pelican), Karen Fukuhara (Lady Himi), Mark Hamill (Granduncle) and Florence Pugh (Kiriko).
Touted as Miyazaki’s final Studio Ghibli project, The Boy and the Heron was released in Japan on July 14 last year. Its Japanese voice cast includes Soma Santoki as Mahito, Masaki Suda as the grey heron, Aimyon as Lady Himi and Takuya Kimura as Shoichi Maki.
