He is known to be one of the fittest actors in the Hindi film industry, his rippling physique totally ‘neighbour’s envy owner’s pride’. t2 caught up with John Abraham on his fitness funda and more in a chat about ‘WWE, 100% Pure Sports Entertainment’ campaign by Sony Sports Network, in which he recently starred.

Have you been a WWE fan?

I have been a WWE fan for years and have loved watching the thrilling action with the twists in their stories. In fact, I have grown up watching some of the biggest WWE legends of my time like Triple H, The Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels. These WWE Superstars are an inspiration to every kid. While every WWE fan wants to meet these stars, I have been lucky enough to meet a few of them and even work with Drew (McIntyre). It was such a great experience to work with him and get to know his regimen and techniques. Hopefully, I will be able to try some of these in my stunts as well!

What’s the most exciting bit about it for you?

With WWE, I think there are multiple factors that keep everyone engaged — their plots, wrestlers, action and drama. Over the years, I have seen wrestlers becoming Superstars and stars becoming legends. There is always some sort of a twist or surprise in store — the return of legends, retirement of superstars, introduction of new stars and much more which keep you hooked to the screen. Apart from that, I also love high-intensity action. It has always been my favourite genre and I enjoy performing my own stunts in my films.

Whom do you love watching?

Hands down Triple H. I have watched him since he made his WWE debut in 1995 and have been his fan since then. After his debut, I followed his journey of asserting his dominance in the show and breaking his opponents with his signature ‘Pedigree’ move. He has ruled the WWE stage for more than two decades. Even today, he has returned to the show in an administrative role, which shows his passion for WWE.

Any memories of a crazy match?

There are so many mind-blowing matches that I have seen and loved, but if I must point out one it will have to be the Backlash 2006 match between Triple H and John Cena. Triple H bleeding from his brow seemed like a normal day at work, but the match got so intense that his entire torso got covered in blood. While Cena ended up winning the match, Triple H won hearts with his entertaining performance. I would also like to give a special mention to the WWE SummerSlam 2022 match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar, which inspired the use of an excavator/ tractor in the campaign film.

Fitness-wise, what do you think it entails to be a WWE Superstar?

I think determination and passion are the most important things required to be a WWE Superstar. Along with these, I’m sure following a strict workout regimen and diet is needed. WWE Superstars also need to challenge themselves every day and make sure they take out the best of themselves because when you’re performing at such a high-intensity stage you need to give more than 100 per cent.

How has your fitness routine changed over the years?

Fitness is something that I have always worked hard for. I am a firm believer of keeping myself fit to face any kind of challenge. Over the years, I have stuck to a strict diet and training regimen. From giving up sweets, unhealthy food and aerated drinks to following a proper sleep and workout schedule, I have ensured that no stone is left unturned. And presently, I prefer doing more challenging and stunt-oriented roles which require much more strength and stamina. So, it becomes more important to ensure that I stay updated on my schedule.

What is the golden rule of working out?

Sleep, food, and exercise — these are the main pillars of a healthy workout. Sticking to a proper sleep schedule is very important. As the saying goes, ‘early to bed, early to rise’. Next is good food, healthy food. I avoid any kind of unhealthy food and aerated drinks. Green tea, soup and whole-grain food are something that comprises my daily diet. I haven’t even eaten a sweet in nearly three decades. And definitely, exercise — it’s important to follow a strict training regimen. I need to be punctual with this schedule and ensure that I don’t miss out on my training on any given day.

Do you have icons when it comes to staying fit?

I take inspiration from a lot of people who motivate me to achieve their level of fitness and discipline. Friends and colleagues from the industry have inspired me to stay committed to my fitness journey. In WWE, I think John Cena has fascinated me a lot. He is a WWE Superstar and has also been a big name in Hollywood. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with WWE Superstar Drew McIntyre on the ‘WWE, 100% Pure Sports Entertainment’ campaign, and I was amazed to see his strength, fitness, and discipline.
