Rajkummar Rao, Gulshan Devaiah and Adarsh Gourav’s aspiring gangsters battle it out among themselves and with Dulquer Salmaan’s upright cop in the 1990s Bollywood-inspired trailer of Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.’s upcoming gangster comedy series Guns & Gulaabs.
Unveiled by Netflix India, the trailer takes us to the fictional town of Gulaabgunj in the early 1990s. The two-minute-51-second video introduces Adarsh Gourav’s Chhota Ganchi, a reluctant heir to a ruling gang; Rajkummar Rao’s lovestruck mechanic ‘Panna’ Tipu; and Gulshan Devaiah’s psychopathic killer ‘4 Cut’ Atmaram.
We see their worlds colliding after the arrival of Dulquer Salmaan’s honest police officer Arjun, who becomes the agent of chaos in Gulaabganj. The clip also shows late actor Satish Kaushik in a Godfather-esque avatar in one of his last-ever appearances.
Guns & Gulaabs comes across as an eclectic gangster drama with a dash of Raj & DK’s trademark black comedy. Set against the backdrop of power struggles, revenge plots and old-school romance, the trailer has snippets of several disco-inspired Bollywood songs from the era, like Usha Uthup’s Rambha Ho, and American rock band Foreigner’s Waiting for a Girl Like You.

Speaking about the upcoming series at the trailer launch event, show creator Raj Nidimoru said, “Life is too easy now and quick. (In the ’90s), there was a lot more effort... you had to work hard at everything and so the results were also sweeter in every single aspect of life. I think it’s in our nature to look back at the time we were in. Nostalgia is a part of us and there is always a charm. As soon as you think about the past, there’s a charm to it. It brings a smile to your face.”
“This is also a throwback to our initial films like 99, Shor in the City. That kind of genre and energy. In a way, it’s us going back to our own early sensibilities,” added co-creator Krishna D.K. The filmmaker-producer duo are known for series like The Family Man and Farzi.
Guns & Gulaabs also features Modern Love: Chennai’s TJ Bhanu, Shreya Dhanwanthary of Scam 1992 fame and popular television actress Pooja A. Gor in important roles. The series will stream on Netflix from August 18.
