With Bollywood stars like Kajol and Shahid Kapoor gearing up for their web series debut in 2023, the OTT space is set to witness a slew of new shows that will present popular actors in never-seen-before avatars. From crime thrillers to Indian adaptation of international shows, here are five upcoming Hindi web series we look forward to watching this year.
Class (Netflix)
A remake of the popular Spanish series Elite, Class is a coming-of-age drama that explores the dynamics of friendship, love, jealousy and power dynamics in a group of students. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, the show promises to offer Riverdale-like mystery and celebrate diversity like Euphoria. Class features a young cast that includes Gurfateh Pirzada, Anjali Sivaraman, Ayesha Kanga, Chayan Chopra, Chintan Rachchh, Cwaayal Singh, Madhyama Segal, Moses Koul, Naina Bhan, Piyush Khati and Zeyn Shaw.
Guns & Gulaabs (Netflix)
Rajkummar Rao, who earned accolades for his performance in Netflix’s neo-noir comedy Monica, O My Darling, will be sharing screen space with Chup actor Dulquer Salmaan in Guns & Gulaabs. It’s a crime comedy directed by Stree co-writers Raj & DK (Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK). The White Tiger actor Adarsh Gourav and Duranga actor Gulshan Devaiah are also part of the cast. The four actors will play a bunch of misfits in Guns & Gulaabs, described by the makers as a ‘deliciously wicked tale of crime, love and innocence that uniquely blends the romance of the ’90s with a fast-paced crime thriller’.
Farzi (Amazon Prime Video)
Shahid Kapoor will make his web series debut with the Amazon Prime Video Original, Farzi, to be directed by Raj & DK. Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon and Amol Palekar will join the Jersey star in this series, described as a “fast-paced, edgy one-of-a-kind thriller”.
In a poster of Farzi, shared on social media, Shahid is seen sitting on a chair, engrossed in painting. Several of his artworks adorn the background. The caption to this photo reads, ‘An artist who gets pulled into the murky high stakes of a con job and a fiery task force officer on the mission to rid the country of his menaces in a fast-paced, edgy one-of-a-kind thriller’.
The Good Wife – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhokha (Disney+ Hotstar)
Kajol, who had earlier worked in the Netflix film Tribhanga, will make her web series debut with this Indian adaptation of popular US TV drama The Good Wife. Directed by Suparn Varma, the show will see Kajol adorn the robes of a lawyer. Kajol plays a housewife who returns to legal practice after 13 years when her husband gets imprisoned. Kubbra Sait, Sheeba Chaddha and Aamir Ali will be seen alongside the Salaam Venky actress in The Good Wife—Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhokha.
Soup (Netflix)
Abhishek Chaubey of Ishqiya, Udta Punjab and Sonchiriya fame is making his Netflix debut with Soup, a dark comedy based on true incidents. The series will bring together two widely acclaimed artistes — Manoj Bajpayee and Konkona Sensharma. Konkona will be seen in the role of Swathi Shetty, a bad cook who dreams of owning her restaurant. Manoj will slip into the shoes of her unsupportive husband Prabhakar, who does not trust her wife’s intentions. Soon, fate offers Swathi a chance to fulfil her dream and she starts cooking up a master plan.
