Greta Gerwig's Barbie has minted USD 1.381 billion in ticket sales to become the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s lifetime collection of USD 1.35 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

Alongside claiming the title of this year's highest-grossing film, the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starrer fantasy comedy has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing movie to date, surpassing the previous record held by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (lifetime collection of USD 1.34 billion), in just over one month after its release.

Barbie’s success has been marked by several record-breaking moments, including the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2023 that witnessed an impressive USD 162 million in ticket sales within its first three days in theatres. Greta Gerwig has also become the highest-grossing female director ever in the US.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which premiered on the same day as Barbie, has also experienced substantial financial gains thanks to the Barbenheimer phenomenon. The biographical thriller headlined by Cillian Murphy has now become Nolan’s third-highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Inception’s total collection of USD 837 million. The Dark Knight Rises (USD 1.081 billion) and The Dark Knight (USD 1.006 billion) occupy the top two positions.

As Barbie continues to make a significant impact at the box office, Warner Bros. is planning to re-release the movie in IMAX theatres for a limited one-week screening from September 22. Audiences will get to see unreleased post-credits scenes in this version.
