Greta Gerwig became the first-ever female director to join the billion-dollar club with her film Barbie crossing the USD 1-billion mark in the worldwide box office in hardly 17 days since its release, according to trade reports.
Featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in lead roles, Barbie minted approximately USD 459 million in the U.S. and USD 572 million internationally since its debut on July 21, taking its total collection to USD 1.03 billion.
The Warner Bros. Pictures' live-action film has now become the second highest-grossing release of the year, trailing only behind Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which amassed an impressive USD 1.35 billion globally after its release in April.
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which also released on the same day as Barbie, managed to cross the half-a-billion mark at the global box office during the same period. The biographical thriller, starring Cillian Murphy in the lead role, raked in close to USD 553 million worldwide, out of which USD 228 million came from the U.S. and USD 324 million from international markets.
In India, Nolan's biographical thriller outperformed Gerwig's fantasy comedy. While Barbie minted Rs 42.22 crore nett in 17 days, Oppenheimer went on to earn Rs 113.75 crore nett during the same period in India.
