Indian tabla legend Zakir Hussain and singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan bagged Grammy trophies at the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards for their involvement in the global fusion music scene on Monday.

Both Shankar and Zakir received the Grammy in the best Global Music Album category for their fusion band Shakti’s 2023 studio album This Moment. Zakir went on to win another award in the best global music performance category for the song Pashto alongside Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Rakesh Chaurasia.

Rakesh, who is a virtuoso flutist, bagged two awards for his album As We Speak in the Best Contemporary Instrumental and Best Global Music Performance categories.

“Congrats Best Global Music Album winner - 'This Moment' Shakti. #GRAMMYs,” the US-based Recording Academy wrote on X alongside a picture of Shankar and Zakir at the awards ceremony held at Los Angeles’s Crypto.com Arena.

This Moment is Shakti’s third studio album and consists of eight songs. The album marked the band’s return to the world music scene after 46 years.

Fusing genres of Indian music and jazz, Shakti comprises percussionists Zakir and V Selvaganesh, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and English guitarist John McLaughlin. Shankar is currently the lead vocalist of the band formed in 1974.

Three-time Grammy Award-winning Indian music composer Ricky Kej took to X and heaped praise on the musicians for their win. He shared a video of the musicians delivering their acceptance speeches as the crowd cheered them on.

“Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends and India. We are proud of you, India,” Mahadevan said while accepting the award, adding that he would like to dedicate it to his wife Sangeeta for whom he writes every note of his music.

With Monday’s wins, Zakir now has three Grammys in his trophy cabinet. In 2009, the tabla maestro won his first Grammy in the Contemporary World Music Album category for Global Drum Project alongside Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo.
