Beyonce, Harry Styles and Samara Joy stole the limelight at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles on Monday — a ceremony that also saw many artists make history.
Harry Styles bagged three awards —Album of the Year, Best Engineered Album-Non-Classical, and the Best Pop Vocal Album awards— for Harry’s House.
“I feel like on nights like tonight, there is no such thing as ‘best in music.' This is really really kind … this doesn’t happen to people like me very often, and this is so nice, thank you very much,” Harry said while accepting the award for the Album of the Year.
Adele went home with her 16th Grammy award for her song Easy On Me, beating the likes of Doja Cat, Harry Styles, Lizzo, Bad Bunny and Steve Lacy. She won the Best Pop Solo Performance award.
While American singer-songwriter Beyonce became the artist with the highest number of Grammy wins by bagging four awards at the ceremony, actress Viola Davis made it to the EGOT club with her memoir Finding Me winning the Best Audio Book award.
The CUFF IT singer now has 32 Grammy awards in her kitty and Viola is the third Black woman in history to achieve the coveted EGOT —Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony— status.
Lizzo won the Record of the Year for About Damn Time and gave a shout out to Beyonce, who was also nominated for the award. “You changed my life. You clearly are the artist of our lives,” Lizzo said in her acceptance speech.
The Song of the year went to Bonnie Raitt for Just Like That while Kendrick Lamar bagged the Best Rap Album award for Mr. Morale & the Big Stepper, beating DJ Khaled, Future, Jack Harlow and Pusha T. Kendrick also took home the Best Rap Performance award for The Heart Part 5.
Jazz singer Samara Joy won the Best New Artist of the year award, trumping Anitta, Maneskin and Molly Tuttle. She also won the best Jazz Vocal Album for Linger Awhile.
Kim Petras also made history at the awards. She won the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award with Sam Smith for Unholy, becoming the first transgender woman to win the award.
“I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors open for me so I could be here tonight,” an emotional Kim said while receiving the award. She also gave a shout out to Madonna for fighting for LGBTQ rights. “I don’t think I could be here without Madonna.”
Muni Long beat Beyonce to win the award for the Best R&B Performance with Hrs & Hrs.
Taylor Swift made history once again with a win in the Best Music Video category for All Too Well (The Short Film), becoming the first artist to win the award for a self-directed music video.
Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny grabbed the Best Música Urbana Album for Un Verano Sin Ti and left the audience mesmerized by his on-stage performance at the 65th award ceremony.
