Barbie and Oppenheimer emerge as frontrunners with nine and eight nominations, respectively, at the 81st edition of Golden Globe Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on January 7.

With its nine nominations, Barbie now stands as the second-most nominated film at the Globes, tying with the 1972 film Cabaret. The neon comedy’s nominations span various categories, with Margot Robbie earning a nod for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor and Greta Gerwig for Best Director.

Barbie also garnered three nominations for Best Original Song, featuring tracks like Dance The Night by Dua Lipa, I'm Just Ken by Ryan Gosling and What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish.

Christopher Nolan-directed Oppenheimer got nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a new category introduced for the 2024 ceremony to acknowledge films popular with the public. While Nolan joined the race for Best Director, Emily Blunt got her nomination for her supporting role in the film.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things are also strong contenders, each securing seven nominations. South Korean film Past Lives stands out as the most nominated non-English language film with a total of five nominations.

In the Best Actor in a Drama category, Cillian Murphy contends for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, facing tough competition from Bradley Cooper portraying composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. Colman Domingo is also in the running for Rustin — the true story of the man behind Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington. Andrew Scott secured a nomination for his performance in the British romantic fantasy film All of Us Strangers.

In the television categories, HBO’s Succession leads with a total of nine nominations, including Best TV Drama Series. Other nominees for the best TV drama category include 1923, The Crown, The Diplomat, The Last of Us and The Morning Show.

In the Best Comedy category, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building will vie for the top spot against Abbott Elementary, Barry, Jury Duty and Ted Lasso.
