Archenemies-turned-allies Kong and Godzilla join forces to confront a colossal threat that any one of the mighty monsters cannot fight alone in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire trailer, dropped by Warner Bros on Monday.

2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong initiated the epic crossover where the two monsters faced off and eventually joined forces to save the Earth.

The two-minute-48-second-long trailer starts with a seismometer recording major movements, foretelling the ground-shaking clash of the Titans. A voiceover talks about how life not only exists on the Earth’s surface but under it as well in the subterrestrial realm known as the Hollow Earth. This newly discovered Hollow Earth is where the new threat in the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong rises from.

Kong, seen wearing a yellow gauntlet on his hand, breaks through the ground next to the pyramids in the opening shots of the trailer before the video transitions to scenes from Hollow Earth. In the prehistoric-looking new world, we get to see Rebecca Hall’s Ilene Andrews joined by Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens, a new character.

In the realm where Kong came from, the mega primate discovers a young Titan which later in the trailer is referred to as “mini Kong”. Kong also discovers what killed off other Titan’s whose skeletons were shown in Godzilla vs Kong. The new threat to the world is a red-furred, orangutan-like Titan known as the Scar King. In the trailer, the Scar King can be seen subjugating Titans that look like Kong before reaching the surface world and wreaking havoc.

Taking down Scar King is not a task that Kong has to take up alone. The trailer shows Godzilla hibernating in an icy cocoon with a pinkish-purple glow surrounding him.

Breaking out of the ice, Godzilla is seen sporting purple glowing dorsal spikes. His atomic breath too appears to be purple instead of the blue seen in the past films. In the closing scenes of the trailer, the evolved Godzilla and gauntlet-wearing Kong are seen running side-by-side towards the Scar King.

Warner Bros. revealed that the film will be released in 2024. The release date, however, is yet to be announced.
