Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire flies past Crew at box office on opening day

The monster movie minted Rs 13.8 crore nett on Day 1, while the heist comedy raked in Rs 8.75 crore nett

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire stormed into Indian cinemas with resounding success, amassing Rs 13.8 crore nett, leaving Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon’s Crew on its trail on its opening day, as per trade figures reported by industry data-tracking website Sacnilk.

The Rajesh A Krishnan-helmed heist comedy minted Rs 8.75 crore nett on its first day in cinemas, turning out to be the third highest Hindi opener of 2024. Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Fighter (Rs 23 crore nett) and Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan (Rs 14.75 crore nett) occupy the top two positions on the list.

Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. It opened on Friday with an overall English occupancy rate of 33.93 per cent.

The monster movie emerged as the second-highest Hollywood opener in India post pandemic. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which minted Rs 40 crore nett in India on Day 1, still tops the chart.

Featuring an ensemble cast including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns and Fala Chen, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire beat the opening-day collections of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (Rs 13.5 crore nett) in India by a whisker.
