Star Theatre in Hatibagan reverberated with the chants of “one two three four, Jeetda superstar!” as the trailer of Boomerang was launched on May 24. Starring Jeet and Rukmini Maitra, Boomerang is a comedy sci-fi movie based on a play by Punoray Ruby Ray. The Sauvik Kundu directorial will be one of the firsts in this genre in the Bengali industry and will release on June 7. The film also stars Saurav Das, Shyamal Chakraborty, Rajatava Dutta, Kharaj Mukherjee, Biswanath Basu and Ambarish Bhattacharya.

Jeet plays the role of a scientist who creates an andro-humanoid robot Nisha resembling his wife Isha. Both the characters of Nisha and Isha are played by Rukmini. When Nisha the robot enters Samar Sen’s (Jeet) household, the house help calls Isha, Samar’s wife and tells her about “some woman in the house” The subsequent series of events leads to confusion and moments filled with laughter as Jeet and Saurav’s characters try to explain to Isha and the rest of the family about Nisha. Interestingly, the trailer begins with Jeet’s Samar Sen character in his magical bike saving a child in need. The trailer also raises the question as to why India does not have its own Batman or Superman.

Dressed in a white shirt and denims, Jeet’s fandom resulted in a jam-packed Star Theatre and when he finally went on the stage after the trailer launch, the crowd could not keep calm. The handsome actor said: “Thank you for that one two three four count but my version goes: ‘One two three four, Jeet is always yours’.

As he asked about the trailer, the crowd reacted with loud cheers. “We have a wonderful cast in Boomerang and most of them are present here,” he said. As seen in the trailer, Jeet also delivered his dialogue, “Baba tule kotha na”, on public demand as he addressed the crowd. “There is a saying that anything that can be conceived and believed can be achieved. When we saw the play by Punoray we could see the cinematic conversion of the story and Sauvik came up with that. After watching the play several times, we wanted this story to reach the masses and thus Boomerang. Apart from the team present here, the film could only be made because another team has worked with us from Hyderabad for the visuals. If you liked the trailer, please share it and watch the film in the cinema hall,” said Jeet.

Rukmini glowed in a grey pantsuit and minimalist make-up. She said: “Boomerang is a very courageous step in Bengali cinema and it’s Sauvik’s brainchild. We have mostly seen such movies being made in Hollywood but it’s definitely a first for Bengali cinema. The fact that any production house would give such a project the green signal is surprising since it’s a risky venture. But I still remember that every day I walked inside the set, I saw a new set-up. It has been an honour to work with such experienced actors in this film, I really hope everyone loves the film. We had to take care of every minute detail since there were two very distinct characters played by me. On one hand, it was a person while on the other there was a robot. But I had immense fun while shooting the film, I have always loved challenging roles.”

Talking about her experience of working with Jeet, she said that he is more of a friend than a co-actor and it is always a fun-filled experience working with him.

Boomerang is an authentic story from Bengal. It is based on a Bengali play. The first time I saw the play was when Phalguni Jethu (Phalguni Chatterjee), Abir’s father told me to witness one of its shows. When I went there, I saw crazy things happening on the stage. There were robots, and science fiction on the stage of Bengali theatre and it was very exciting. When I told Jeetda about this he told me to develop it and that’s how Boomerang was conceived,” said Sauvik, the director.

Saurav Das, who plays the role of Jeet’s scientist friend Ayan, said, “It has been a long time since I am acting in a mass film... usually intense characters with grey shades intrigue me more. But I am so happy that I played Ayan who is such a pivotal character. Moreover, Boomerang being a family-oriented comedy-drama was the perfect film for me to go back to playing an easy-going and funny character. I got the role a day before the shooting for Boomerang began. When I read the complete script, I absolutely loved it! It was also my first time working alongside Jeetda and for his production house. I am overall very excited for the film to hit the screens on June 7.”
