In a city gripped by fear, a shadowy figure stalks the streets. This mysterious killer, a master of deception, leaves no trace behind. The trailer of Chaalchitro — The Frame Fatale launched last Friday at PVR-INOX (South City) offers a tantalising glimpse into a world shrouded in intrigue, deception, and murder. The launch saw the presence of cast and crew including director Pratim D. Gupta and actors Tota Roy Choudhury, Raima Sen, Swastika Dutta, Anirban Chakrabarti and Indrajeet Bose.

Tota plays a cop on a quest to find a serial killer. He looked dapper in a black Bandhgala at the trailer launch. “The element of surprise, mystery and that sense of danger alongside all-pervading crime, is really something! The high point for me in the trailer is this frame where all four of us, Shantanu (Maheshwari), Anirban, Apurba and myself are put together on screen in different costumes and mindsets. Raima and I had our start in the industry around the same time.”

Talking about his Christmas plans, the actor said, “I visit Park Street every year on Christmas and I will make it a point to do the same this year too. Between promotions, I will manage to sit with a plum cake and a strong cup of coffee and soak in the festive energy.”

At the trailer’s core lies a chilling narrative centred around a killer who has the city gripped in fear. This meticulous murderer leaves no trace, baffling the police and leaving the populace in a state of constant anxiety. Pratim chatted with t2 on what he wanted to convey to the audience through the trailer. “I have been working on this trailer for almost a year. For me, a thriller has to stand out in the very first communication to the audience. The trailer conveys exactly what the film is... it gives you enough about the story but not the entire thing. There are multiple high points in the trailer but the gradual progression stands out. From their workspaces, the trailer then takes the audience to their homes. Tota with Raima, Anirbanda with Tanika, Indrajeet with Priya and Swastika with Shantanu... and then we see Bratyada’s (Basu) character helping them or not. Then we see a lot of images leading to Apurba’s mysterious character. I think a trailer should have a high point every five seconds and that is exactly what we kept in mind.”

Raima looked stunning and channelled Christmas vibes in red. She said, “I have wanted to work with Pratim for a very long time. When Pratim called me last year for Chaalchitro, I said yes to the film without even reading the script. After Chokher Bali, nobody thought of Tota and me together on-screen and I think that is another interesting point for the audience. Apart from the music and performances, Chaalchitro — The Frame Fatale is a very different kind of thriller.”

Talking about Raima’s character, Pratim said, “Raima was supposed to be in my first film. However, that did not work out and that was 2008. It is 2024 and now we are finally doing a film together. I want to someday make a film with only her... in Chaalchitro, it might seem like she’s just Tota’s partner in the trailer but on watching the film the audience will know what an integral part of the story she is! What I love about Raima is that she has the girl and the woman in her intact. One could cast her for either and she would be perfect.”

The trailer paints a portrait of a “mastermind” engaged in a deadly game. As the trailer progresses, we see glimpses of the killer’s modus operandi. The carefully curated trailer also reveals the reason behind the movie’s title. Chaalchitro — The Frame Fatale is set to release in theatres on December 20.
