The makers of Gladiator II have dropped new character posters of Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington and Fred Hechinger for the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 film starring Russell Crowe.
The posters offer a glimpse into the gritty world of the Roman Empire. Paul Mescal, who plays Lucius, is shown in a powerful gladiator stance, sporting a traditional gladiator armour, which includes a bare chest with straps across his torso, showcasing his muscular physique.
Pedro Pascal’s poster showcases his character General Acacius with a brooding expression. Denzel Washington exudes a commanding presence as Macrinus in his poster, drawing attention as one of the most anticipated new characters in the story.
Other posters include Joseph Quinn, who sports a blonde look for the role of Emperor Geta, and Connie Nielsen returning as Lucius’ mother Lucilla. Fred Hechinger’s character, Emperor Caracalla, is portrayed with a youthful yet intense look, as he sits on his throne and laughs devilishly.
Gladiator II picks up after the death of Maximus (Russell Crowe), centering on his son Lucius, whose life was profoundly influenced by the fallen hero. The story explores Lucius’s journey as he rises to become a gladiator, determined to honour his father’s legacy and reclaim the lost glory of Rome. Facing formidable challenges, Lucius must go head-to-head with Pedro Pascal’s character, General Acacius, a powerful figure standing in the way of Rome’s resurgence.
Apart from Connie Nielson, Djimon Hounsou is also set to reprise his role as Juba in the upcoming sequel. Barry Keoghan and Derek Jacobi will also join the cast.
The original 2000 film follows the story of Maximus, a betrayed Roman general who rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and the betrayal by the corrupt emperor Commodus.
Gladiator II is slated to hit theatres this year on November 22.
