Game of Thrones fans may soon get to see Kit Harington return as fan-favourite Jon Snow in an upcoming spinoff based on the character’s journey following the end of the popular show, the final episode of which had 13 million viewers on HBO alone.
While the makers of the series have already announced a prequel House of The Dragon, HBO is planning a spinoff based on the character Jon Snow, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A live-action show following the journey of the character after the end of the extremely popular series is reportedly in the early stages of development. If the proposed series continues to be explored, it will be the first sequel to Game of Thrones.
Disney has already seen immense success with spinoffs of its Marvel and Star Wars franchise. Shows like Loki and Wanda-Vision have become integral parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. At the same time, shows like Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have continued the Star-Wars lore.
Similarly, cashing in on the popularity of the show, based on the world created by George R. R. Martin in his fantasy-novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, HBO is taking steps towards creating more spinoffs. It is expected that if the show does get developed, Harrington will reprise the role of Snow. For his role as Snow, Harington had been nominated twice for an Emmy.
The final season of Game of Thrones had Snow realise that he was Aegon Targaryen, the rightful ruler of Westeros, and not the illegitimate son of Ned Stark. After killing his aunt/lover Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Snow gave up his rightful place on the Iron Throne, leaving Westeros for a journey back to the North of the Wall.
The proposed show may follow his escapades up in the North. However, with the White Walkers gone, it is to be seen what new threat awaits beyond The Wall. The sequel could also see the return of other characters like Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) among others who survived the final season.
Jon Snow’s sequel could open the door to a sequel for Arya Stark as well as she was seen embarking on a journey to the edge of the known Game of Thrones world.
Since the end of Game of Thrones, Harington, along with his Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden, was seen in the 2021 MCU movie Eternals. He also appeared in the 2021 television special Friends: Reunion.
Representatives of HBO and Harington are yet to confirm the proposed sequel.
