Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy's upcoming action-adventure film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga received an eight-minute-long standing ovation following its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth instalment in George Miller’s action franchise, is slated to hit theatres in India on May 23. The film comes nine years after the last instalment Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, and 45 years after the original Mad Max film.
“8 👏🏻 minutes 👏🏻Standing Ovation! #Furiosa at #CannesFilmFestival 2024,” Warner Bros India wrote alongside a video showing the audience clapping and cheering during the credits roll of the film.
“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home,” reads the official synopsis of the film on Cannes’ official website.
Anya plays Furiosa, a role which was previously portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Hemsworth, on the other hand, essays the role of a demented warlord. The film is set a decade prior to the events of the 2015 film.
Miller has written the screenplay for the film along with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris. The upcoming movie also stars Elsa Pataky, Michael DeLuca, Pamela Abdy, Doug Mitchell, Alyla Browne and Tom Burke.

While Anya exuded radiance in a white shimmery strapless gown at the event, Hemsworth looked dapper in a white satin blazer coupled with black trousers.
Mad Max: Fury Road, which came out in 2015, garnered 10 Oscar nominations and bagged six statuettes, including best film editing, best production design, and best costume design. It grossed USD 380.4 million at the global box office, emerging as the highest-grossing Mad Max film ever.
