Stranger Things, Wednesday and The Witcher are among a slew of popular shows that will not be returning to Netflix this year, according to the streamer’s 2024 watchlist dropped on Thursday. Here’s a rundown on five such shows that are likely to make a comeback next year.

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins in the 1980s, the first season of the Duffer Brothers-created sci-fi series first premiered on the streamer in July 2016.

Steeped deep in the mythology and lore surrounding the ‘upside down’, Stranger Things stars Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp and Finn Wolfhard in lead roles.

The disappearance of Schnapp’s Will Byers in the pilot episode of the series triggers a sequence of events, culminating in Brown’s Eleven a.k.a Jane Hopper slaying Vecna, the murderous antagonist from an alternate dimension, with the help of telekinesis in the closing moments of Season 4.

“While the audience learned quite a bit about the Upside Down in Season 4, there’s definitely more to come in Season 5,” reads a recent press communique from Netflix. The makers also revealed that Terminator actress Linda Hamilton will join the cast in the upcoming season.

Producer Ross Duffer recently dropped a few behind-the-scenes pictures from the set of the show’s fifth and final instalment, which is slated to hit Netflix in 2025.

Wednesday

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’s supernatural mystery series, starring Jenna Ortega, broke the Netflix record for most hours viewed in a single week twice after its premiere on November 23, 2022.

“In the first week, it raked in 341.23 million hours viewed; in its second, 411.29 million hours viewed,” the makers announced in a statement, also revealing that the show has been renewed for a second season.

The first instalment of the series ended with Hyde (played by Hunter Doohan) still alive and Wednesday receiving threatening phone calls and texts from an unknown number.

Wednesday will return with “more torture” and even the possible introduction of a new Addams family member in its second instalment, reveals a report on Tudum, Netflix’s companion site. However, fans will perhaps have to wait till 2025 before they can enjoy this upcoming instalment.

The Witcher

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich’s Witcher, loosely adapted from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s eponymous book series, chronicles the adventures of a mutated monster-hunter Geralt in a fictional landmass known as the Continent.

Billed as a culmination of the first two seasons, Season 3 of the show ended with Mahesh Jadu’s treacherous Vilgefortz getting the best of Henry Cavill’s Geralt.

As per a recent press release from Netflix, the show has been renewed for a fourth instalment with Liam Hemsworth replacing Cavill as the protagonist. Laurence Fishburne, known for movies like The School for Good and Evil (2022) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), will also join the cast as Regis.

Season 4 will follow Geralt’s quest to find Ciri and Yennefer and is likely to begin production this spring, the makers further revealed in the statement.

Witcher Season 4 will reportedly drop on Netflix in 2025.

Ginny and Georgia

Sarah Lampert’s comedy drama starring Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey in the titular roles has been renewed for Seasons 3 and 4, Netflix announced on Instagram, sharing a video of the cast in May last year.

“The shocking Season 2 finale — which saw Georgia arrested at her own wedding after she suffocated a comatose Tom with a pillow to spare his family from further suffering — will directly set the stage for the show’s third season,” reads a press statement released by the streamer early this month.

Though no further details have been revealed by the makers yet, the third instalment is likely to hit Netflix in 2025.

Virgin River

Inspired by Robyn Carr’s novels of the same name, this small-town drama, starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, will be returning to Netflix for its sixth instalment, the streamer revealed in a press release issued in November last year.

In 2022, Erin Cardillo, producer and writer of the show, had told Tudum that the upcoming season will usher in new, unprecedented complications for all the characters.

Virgin River Season 6 will reportedly premiere on Netflix next year.
