The Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) has announced a special one-time screening of a vintage cinemascope print of the 1975 blockbuster Sholay, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar, on August 31 at Mumbai’s Regal Cinema.

The one-time screening, scheduled to take place at 5:30pm, has been organised to honour the screenwriting duo Salim-Javed.

The nearly 50-year-old vintage print will offer audiences a rare opportunity to experience the film in its original glory. The screening is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Don't miss the opportunity to watch the film projected on celluloid on the big screen with Salim-Javed and the director Ramesh Sippy. FHF would like to thank the copyright holder Shehzad Sippy for giving us permission to screen the print of the film preserved at the FHF archive. What an experience to check the print today at Regal,” the official handle of FHF wrote on social media.

A landmark in Indian cinema, Sholay is often hailed as the greatest Bollywood film of all time. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film blends action, drama and comedy. The story revolves around two criminals, Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh), who are hired by a retired police officer, Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev), to capture a ruthless bandit, Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan).

Sholay’s gripping plot, memorable dialogues, and powerful performances made it a massive hit. Its soundtrack, composed by R.D. Burman, added to its enduring legacy.

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, known collectively as Salim-Javed, are credited with redefining the landscape of Indian cinema in the 1970s and 80s. Their collaboration on films like Deewaar, Zanjeer and Sholay established them as pioneering storytellers whose work continues to influence filmmakers today.

Prime Video recently released a documentary titled Angry Young Men that celebrates the legacy of Salim-Javed. Produced by Salman Khan Productions, Excel Media Entertainment and Tiger Baby, the documentary features interviews with industry stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Honey Irani.
