The 74th Primetime Emmys Awards were held at Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning (Monday night in the US). Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson hosted the ceremony.
We take a look at the Emmy winners in different categories and the most-talked-about events at the award ceremony.
Zendaya’s second Emmy: Beating formidable nominees like Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh and Ozark’s Laura Linney, Zendaya took home the Best Actress in a Drama Series award for her role in HBO’s teen drama series Euphoria. She has become the youngest two-time winner of Emmy awards in history; Zendaya landed her first Emmy, also for Euphoria, in 2020.
Succession succeeds: HBO’s Succession bagged a total of four Emmys. It won Best Drama after fending off competition from Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Ozark. Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series over his co-stars Nicholas Braun and Kieran Culkin. Series creator Jesse Armstrong picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Succession also won Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. The show had topped the list of nominees with 25 nods.
First Asian to win Best Actor Emmy in Drama Series: Lee Jung-jae won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Netflix’s Squid Game, becoming the first Asian actor to ever win an Emmy in this category. He is also the fourth Asian to ever win an acting Emmy. Jung-jae faced tough competition from Succession’s Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, and Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk.
Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk won the award for Best Directing in a Drama Series category. Other nominees in the category were Mark Mylod, Cathy Yan and Lorene Scafaria for Succession.
Earlier, South Korean actress Lee You-mi had won in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series category for her role in Squid Game. Other awards for this Korean survival drama on Netflix are Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program.
Ted Lasso back on top: Apple TV+’s sports comedy series Ted Lasso won Best Comedy Series a second time after 2021. Best Comedy Series was one of the most tightly contested categories this year with nominees such as Abbott Elementary, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building and What We Do in the Shadows.
Ted Lasso’s co-creator and lead actor Jason Sudeikis also won Best Actor in a Comedy Series again (after 2021) for his portrayal of an eccentric American soccer coach in charge of an English football club. (Snubs: Only Murders in the Building duo Martin Short and Steve Martin, along with Atalanta’s Donald Glover and Barry’s Bill Hader.)
Major wins in Comedy: Jean Smart of Hacks won Best Actress in a Comedy Series over Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Elle Fanning of The Great, among others. Sheryl Lee Ralph won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary beating the likes of Alex Borstein of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. British comedian and actor Brett Goldstein won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Ted Lasso.
Major wins in Limited or Anthology Series: HBO Max’s The White Lotus won Best Limited or Anthology Series over Hulu’s Dopesick, The Dropout and Pam & Tommy. Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) and Michael Keaton (Dopesick) won the leading acting awards for Limited or Anthology Series.
