Emma Stone’s Frankenstein creature goes on a whirlwind adventure with Mark Ruffalo in search of equality and liberation in the trailer of the upcoming surrealist sci-fi romantic comedy film Poor Things.
Dropped by Searchlight Pictures on Thursday evening, Willem Dafoe’s Dr Godwin Baxter introduces Emma Stone’s Bella — an experimental creation — in the one-minute-22-second-long teaser. She turns out to be eccentric as her brain and body are not fully synchronised.
The trailer then shows glimpses of her backstory, which hints that Bella had thrown herself from a balcony before the experiment was conducted on her. We also see things from Bella’s perspective as she wants to experience her life and explore places. The clip also shows other characters, including Bella’s lover (Mark Ruffalo).

Helmed by Yorgos Lanthimos, known for The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and The Favourite (2018), the film also features Ramy Youssef, Margaret Qualley, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott.
Based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, the screenplay is written by Tony McNamara. It is produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and Yorgos Lanthimos alongside Emma Stone. This will be Stone’s second collaboration with Lanthimos after 2018’s period black comedy film The Favourite.
Poor Things will arrive in theatres on September 8.
