Zoe Saldana plays an underrated lawyer who gets hired by Karla Sofía Gascón’s cartel boss in the trailer of Jacques Audiard’s musical drama Emilia Pérez, which also features Selena Gomez in a key role.

Dropped by Netflix on Monday, the two-minute-32-second-long trailer introduces us to the feared cartel boss Manitas (Gascón), who seeks a fresh start by faking his death and living the rest of life as a woman. Manitas meets lawyer Rita (Saldana) at a bar and hires her to fulfil his mission. Subsequent scenes show Rita talking to a doctor about Gascón’s gender transition plans. She also reaches out to Selena Gomez, who portrays Gascón’s partner.

“Passion has a new name. Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez star in Jacques Audiard’s audacious fever dream, EMILIA PÉREZ. In select theaters this Fall and on Netflix November 13 in the US, UK and Canada,” the streamer wrote alongside the video on Instagram.

“Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being,” reads the official synopsis for Emilia Pérez.

Emilia Pérez is slated to release on Netflix on November 13 in the US, UK and Canada following a theatrical run in France. The film screened in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May and bagged the prestigious Cannes Jury Prize at the festival.
