Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz play four women who pursue their happiness in a city in Mexico in the teaser of Jacques Audiard’s musical drama Emilia Pérez.
Dropped by Gomez on Monday, the one-minute-36-second-long teaser shows the four women navigating the seedy underbelly of Mexico while trying to find happiness. Gascón, who plays the titular character, wants to fake her death to start afresh after undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Saldaña’s underappreciated lawyer Rita, who is working to help Gascón fake her death, spirals into a web of darkness, while her partner, played by Gomez, features in grim scenes.
“From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes @EmiliaPerezFilm, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. EMILIA PÉREZ is in select theaters this fall and on @Netflix November 13 in the US, UK and Canada,” Gomez wrote alongside the teaser on X.
Emilia Pérez is set to premiere on Netflix on November 13 following a theatrical run in France. The film screened in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May and bagged the prestigious Cannes Jury Prize at the festival.
The official synopsis for Emilia Pérez states: “Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being.”
Also starring Edgar Ramirez, Emilia Pérez is slated to release in French theatres on August 21.
