The trailer for American comedian-actress Ellen DeGeneres’ upcoming Netflix comedy special Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, marking her return to the stage after a two-year gap, was dropped by the streamer on Wednesday.
Ellen’s chat show titled The Ellen DeGeneres Show ran from 2003 to 2022. It reportedly went off air due to several controversies.
In the one-minute-23-second-long trailer of the upcoming Netflix special, the comedian-actress said she was “kicked out of show business”.
The comedian, also known for starring in the television sitcoms Ellen and The Ellen Show, spoke about her experiences while she was on a break from the media and focusing on other things. She said that she kept herself busy with gardening and “getting chickens”.
Addressing the controversy surrounding her last show, Ellen said, “I didn’t go into this business for money. It was about healing my childhood wounds.”
Ellen thought she would gain confidence and acceptance by making people happy and that would make her feel good about herself, she added. However, it did not yield results the way she had expected. “All I can say about that is thank god for the money,” she quipped.
In her chat show, Ellen had a catchphrase that she would say at the end of every episode — “be kind”. “The ‘Be Kind’ girl wasn’t kind, that was the headline,” she says in the trailer. Taking a jab at the news headlines, Ellen said, “Had I ended my show by saying ‘go f--- yourselves,’ people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind.”
“In the final comedy special of her historic career, Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being ‘kicked out of show business.’ From the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh reality of becoming a brand name celebrity, she goes deep into her stand-up roots and brings the laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities,” reads the description of the upcoming show on Youtube.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in May 2022 after 19 seasons, largely due to Ellen’s decision to move on to other creative ventures, feeling that the show was no longer challenging. However, the decision was also influenced by the 2020 controversy surrounding allegations of a toxic workplace environment, which led to the dismissal of key executives on her show.
Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval is slated to hit Netflix on September 24.
