The Durga Puja weekend will be a treat for cine-goers, which will also see a clash at the Tollywood box office as four big films are lined up for release on the same day – October 19. Here’s what you need to know before booking your tickets.
Raktabeej
Directors Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, who are renowned for their socially relevant dramas, are venturing into the political thriller genre with Raktabeej. The film is based on the 2014 bomb blast in Burdwan that made national news, and revolves around an attack planned on the President of India when he arrives in his ancestral home for Durga Puja. Abir Chatterjee and Mimi Chakraborty play an IB officer and a cop, respectively, who are in a race against time to save the President, played by Victor Banerjee. Raktabeej also features Anashua Majumdar, Debashish Mondal, Ambarish Bhattacharya and Kanchan Mallick in key roles.
Bagha Jatin
Dev is giving his mainstream hero image a makeover with the role of a legendary Bengali freedom fighter who underwent extreme hardships and gave up his life for Indian independence. Produced by Dev Entertainment Ventures and directed by Arun Roy, Bagha Jatin is a period action drama that will have a pan-India release in Bengali and Hindi. The film delves into the life of the revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin, and how he put up a strong resistance against the British. The film’s cast includes Sreeja Dutta, Sudipta Chakraborty, Samiul Alam, Kolaj Sengupta, Shoaib Kabeer and Rohaan Bhattacharjee.
Dawshom Awbotaar
Veteran actor Prosenjit Chatterjee and director Srijit Mukherji are back together with their next collaboration that brings back Prosenjit’s iconic character, Probir Roy Chowdhury, from Baishe Srabon. Dawshom Awbotaar is a crime thriller that also marks Tollywood’s first cop universe film, weaving in the character of Bijoy Poddar (played by Anirban Bhattacharya) from Vinci Da. The two cops, Probir and Bijoy, will team up to crack the case of a serial killer who thinks he’s an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Dawshom Awbotaar also stars Jisshu Sengupta and Jaya Ahsan.
Jongole Mitin Mashi
Novelist Suchitra Bhattacharya’s creation Mitin Mashi has stood out as a beloved female detective in a film industry dominated by male detectives. Jongole Mitin Mashi is the second film in the Mitin Mashi franchise, directed by Arindam Sil. Koel Mallick reprises her role as the title character, and this time she takes on a racket of poachers in the jungles of Saranda. The film features Subhrajit Dutta and Riya Banik as Mitin’s husband and niece.
