Language-learning application Duolingo’s mascot, a green owl, has undergone a transformation to look like the popular anime character Ryomen Sukuna as part of a promotional campaign for the ongoing anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, streaming on Netflix in India.
Recently dropped on X (formerly Twitter) by Duolingo, the new avatar of the green owl has curse marks, extra eyes on its face and a body similar to Sukuna a.k.a the King of Curses — the strongest cursed spirit in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe.
Duolingo’s post has gone viral on social media with close to 23,000 reposts on X alone, drawing reactions from anime fans from across the globe.
Jujutsu Kaisen is currently in its second season. Duolingo’s post was created in anticipation of the anime’s upcoming arc, the Shibuya incident, which is slated to release on August 31 with 18 new episodes.
The story of Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around Yuji Itadori, an ordinary high school student who accidentally swallows Sukuna’s finger during an encounter and becomes a vessel for him. After taking the curse into his own body, Yuji enrols in Tokyo Jujutsu High School, a clandestine group of Jujutsu Sorcerers that combats cursed spirits and helps exorcise them.
However, the mascot would not be appearing in the upcoming episodes. The Shibuya arc, which is the longest arc in the manga written by Gege Akutami, will focus on Yuji’s mentor Satoru Gojo’s final confrontation with his best-friend-turned-arch-nemesis Suguru Geto. Satoru’s students Yuji, Megumi and Nobara will also put up a fight against Geto.
The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
