Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2 is continuing Bollywood’s purple patch at the box office. The film grossed Rs 27.17 crore on its first Sunday in the cinemas. It collected Rs 15.38 crore gross on Friday — the second biggest opening for a Hindi film in 2022 after Brahmastra: Part 1 - Shiva — and Rs 21.59 crore on Saturday, taking the total collection over the weekend to Rs 64.14 crore gross, as per trade analysts.
Directed by Abhishek Pathak, the sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Drishyam stars Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta and Rajat Kapoor, and is about what happens next to Vijay Salgaonkar (Devgn) and his family with the reopening of the Sam Deshmukh murder case.
Drishyam was directed by Nishikant Kamat, who passed away in 2020 after prolonged illness. Abhishek Pathak took on the mantle to direct the Hindi adaptation of Jeethu Joseph’s Malayalam film series Drishyam (2013) and its 2021 sequel.
Meanwhile, Sooraj Barjatiya’s Uunchai is inching closer to the Rs 25-crore mark in box office collections. Headlined by Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Neena Gupta, Nafisa Ali, Sarika and Parineeti Chopra, the emotional drama did reasonably well in its second weekend, collecting Rs 23.62 crore gross since its release on November 11. Initially released in a limited number of screens, Rajshri Productions plans to increase the show’s screenings in phases in the days to come.
