Actress Drew Barrymore has drawn heat from different quarters after she said she would return with her talk show for a fourth season amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood.
Sharing a long post on Instagram on Monday, the 48-year-old actress and talk show host wrote about how she has stood by the side of writers and actors ever since the beginning of the Hollywood strikes. She, however, also mentioned that it is time for her to return to her show despite the protests.
“I own this choice,” reads Barrymore’s caption as she went on to mention that the return of her show will not support “discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind”.
Barrymore concluded her note by announcing that she will be rebooting her show for a fourth season “with an astute humility”.
Right after Barrymore’s announcement, the official X (formerly Twitter) page of the Writers Guild of America mentioned that the writing for the actress’s show has always been covered by WGA. It clearly stated that the guild will “continue to picket struck shows that are in production during the strike”.
“The Drew Barrymore Show's WGA writers, fans, and our union allies held the picket line for 8+ hours outside of CBS,” the Guild wrote in another tweet alongside pictures of protestors outside CBS Studios.
American comedian and writer Adam Conover took to his X handle to highlight how Barrymore’s decision will affect her writers and all union workers who are currently on strike.
Currently, film and television production in many Hollywood studios have come to a standstill as members of the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA are on strike for better compensation and limited use of artificial intelligence.
