The Walt Disney Company is set to collaborate with Epic Games to create new crossover games featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Avatar and Star Wars films, the two corporations announced on Wednesday.

Sharing a short 44-second video, the companies teased fans with games based on the major Disney franchises. The teaser shows characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Avatar and Star Wars films alongside glimpses of characters from the popular video game Fortnight. The games will be powered by Epic Games’ gaming software Unreal Engine.

In their official statement, Disney wrote that the company will be investing USD 1.5 billion into Epic games, securing an equity stake and solidifying their collaboration for future ventures. Integrating with the Fortnite game, additional Disney franchise games will offer fans a chance to play, watch, shop and engage with the different franchises under the Disney banner. Players can expect dynamic and immersive games where they can create their own narratives and have encounters with Disney characters.

Talking about ‘Disney’s biggest entry’ into the world of gaming, Robert A Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said, “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe.”

“Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio,” said Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games.

This is not the first collaboration between the game makers and the entertainment giant. Disney’s influence has been a part of the Fortnite gameplay for several seasons, including Marvel-inspired battle royale event in 2020. Disney has also extensively used the Unreal Engine to create the Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor games as well as 15 Disney Parks attractions.
