Disney+’s live-action fantasy series Willow will not be renewed for a second season, according to American entertainment magazine Deadline.

The news of the show’s cancellation comes two months after the eight-episode Season 1 ended its run on the streaming platform. The first season of this show is currently streaming in India on Disney+Hotstar.

Based on the 1988 fantasy film of the same name directed by Ron Howard, Willow serves as a sequel to the classic movie as the show begins years after the events of the film. Even though the series won’t be continued, it remains an important world in Lucasfilm’s library and could be revisited in the future.

Willow introduced new characters set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mythical creatures coexist. A group of unlikely heroes set off on a dangerous journey, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.

Produced by Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment, Willow was developed by Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Jonathan Kasdan. The series features Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel and Tony Revolori alongside Warwick Davis, who reprised his title role as Willow Ufgood from the film.

Willow’s cancellation comes amid increased scrutiny at media companies, including Disney, which have been curbing streaming content spending in search of profitability.

Currently, Lucasfilm has been reassessing its film slate, taking time to identify the next movie in the Star Wars franchise. It has built a sizable Star Wars TV footprint on Disney+ with live-action hit The Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka, Acolyte and Skeleton Crew.
