Dev is soon going to play the iconic Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi on the big screen. The Tollywood star took to Twitter to make this announcement to mark his 17 years in the Bengali film industry. “Need all your blessings as always,” he wrote.

Byomkesh Durgo Rahasya, the film where he will be seen as the ‘Satyanweshi’ (truth seeker) for the first time, will be co-produced by Dev Entertainment Ventures and Shadow Films. The cast, crew and director of the upcoming film will be announced soon, Dev tweeted.

Based on novels written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Byomkesh Bakshi has been brought to life on screen — films, TV and OTT — by several filmmakers over the years. From Satyajit Ray’s Chiriyakhana (1967) to Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh Hatyamancha (2022), the popular character has been played by the likes of Uttam Kumar, Rajit Kapur, Abir Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Sujoy Ghosh, the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Anirban Bhattacharya, Gaurav Chakrabarty and Parambrata Chattopadhyay.

The project comes as part of Dev’s ongoing attempt to cast himself in a different mould, which include his recent performances in Tonic, Projapoti, Kishmish and Golondaaj.

Srijit Mukherji, who was initially supposed to adapt Durgo Rahasya for the big screen with Shadow Films, took to Twitter to put an end to speculations about his involvement with Dev’s project. In a tweet, Srijit called the reports “wrong and baseless”. The Autograph director added that he wished to collaborate with Dev in the future and cast him in the role of a historical character.
