Trinamul’s Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien on Wednesday submitted a privilege notice against Amit Shah over the Union home minister’s remarks on BR Ambedkar, PTI reported quoting unnamed sources, as the Opposition targeted the BJP leader over his speech on Tuesday.

Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned over the Opposition’s protests against Shah’s remarks.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Congress-led Opposition INDIA coalition protested with B.R. Ambedkar’s posters, demanding Shah's resignation for what they called his insult of the Dalit leader who was key to the drafting of the Constitution.

“Honourable sir, there is a fashion,” the Union home minister had said in his speech in Hindi on Tuesday. “There is a fashion. Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they would take god’s name so much, they could have got heaven for seven births.

“It’s a good thing,” he had added, going on to list what he called slights against Ambedkar by successive Congress regimes.

Trinamul Rajya Sabha member O’Brien submitted the notice against Shah soon after Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the Union home minister over his speech.

"The mask has fallen! As Parliament reflects on 75 glorious years of the Constitution, HM @AmitShah chose to TARNISH this occasion with DEROGATORY remarks against Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, that too in the temple of Democracy," she posted on X (formerly Twitter).

"This is a display of BJP’s CASTEIST and ANTI-DALIT mindset. If this is how they behave after being reduced to 240 seats, imagine the damage they would've inflicted if their dream of 400 seats had been realised. They’d have rewritten history to entirely erase Dr. Ambedkar's contributions," she alleged.

Attacking the BJP, Mamata added: "HM Amit Shah’s remarks are an insult to the millions who look up to Babasaheb for guidance and inspiration. But what else can you expect from a party that has internalised HATE and BIGOTRY?".

The CM reiterated that Ambedkar deserved to be respected.

"Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is the Father of the Constitution, this outrageous remark is not only an outright attack on him but all members of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution, which symbolised India's unity in diversity with members from all castes, creeds, ethnicities, and religions," Mamata said.

Sharing her post, the Trinamul alleged that Shah's remark wasn't a slip of the tongue but was deliberate.

"At a time when the Parliament is observing 75 years of the Indian Constitution, HM @AmitShah showed the audacity of insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar in his Rajya Sabha speech," the TMC posted on X.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the country will not tolerate Babasaheb Ambedkar's insult and demanded that Shah apologise for his remarks in the Rajya Sabha.

Sharing pictures from the Opposition protest in Parliament, Gandhi said in a Facebook post in Hindi: "Babasaheb is the architect of the Constitution, a great man who gave direction to the country. The country will not tolerate his insult or the insult to the Constitution framed by him. Home Minister should apologize!"

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared pictures from the protest on X.

"One gets rights by taking the name of Ambedkar ji. Taking the name of Ambedkar ji is a symbol of human dignity. Ambedkar ji's name is a symbol of self-respect of crores of Dalits and deprived people," Priyanka said in a post in Hindi on X.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said Shah's remarks show the BJP's "arrogance" and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi take action against him.

Thackeray accused the BJP of insulting icons and revered figures of Maharashtra, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Dr Ambedkar.

He also claimed Shah would not have dared to make remarks about Dr Ambedkar without the backing of the BJP and the RSS.

"Amit Shah's remarks on Dr Ambedkar show the party's (BJP) arrogance and have exposed its true face," the former Maharashtra CM claimed.

He asked whether the BJP's allies -- Telugu Desam Party, JD(U), Ramdas Athawale's RPI and Shiv Sena, -- agree with Shah's remarks on Ambedkar.
