Daniel Radcliffe on Monday took home his first Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical for his portrayal of Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along.
The 77th Annual Tony Awards were held in New York. The ceremony was hosted by Ariana DeBose.
Radcliffe faced strong competitio from Roger Bart from Back To The Future: The Musical, Joshua Boone and Sky Lakota-Lynch from The Outsiders, Brandon Victor Dixon from Hell’s Kitchen, and Steven Skybell from Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
Merrily We Roll Along is Radcliffe's fifth Broadway show and marks his first Tony nomination. The musical also secured wins for best revival of a musical, best lead actor in a musical for Jonathan Groff and best orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick.
“I’m gonna just talk fast and try not to cry. This has been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s been unbelievable,” Radcliffe said in his acceptance speech. He also thanked his parents, who were present in the audience.
The actor went on to thank his co-stars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. “It is an honour to be on stage with you all every single night,” he added.
Best known for playing Harry Potter in the Harry Potter film series that concluded in 2011, Radcliffe has portrayed different roles for both screen and stage. He earned his first Emmy nomination in 2023 for his performance as Weird Al Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
