Popular anime series Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 stole the spotlight at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards held in Tokyo on Saturday, bagging trophies across eight categories including Anime of the Year, Best Director and Best Action.

Animated by MAPPA Studios, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 also received awards in the Best Character Design, Best Cinematography, Best Opening and Ending Sequence, Best Supporting Character and Best VA Performance categories.
While Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu took the prize home for the Best Character Design category, Shota Goshozono was honoured with the Best Director award. Fan-favourite character Satoru Gojo was named the Best Supporting Character at the annual awards show, which is in its eighth year.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 was one of the most-hyped anime sequels of 2023, while Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc clinched the Best Animation award, apart from winning in the Best Art Direction and Best Fantasy categories.
One Piece, whose latest episode covers the final arc of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, emerged as the Best Continuing Series. Running for over a thousand episodes, the anime also clinched the Best Main Character award for its protagonist Monkey D Luffy, who continues to win hearts even after 25 years of its first episode.
Makoto Shinkai’s film Suzume, which was the filmmaker’s ode to the people of Japan who live in constant fear of earthquakes ravaging the country, has been named the Best Film from last year in the anime world.
While little Anya’s plans to keep her fake family together in Spy x Family made the series emerge as the Best Comedy, Eren Yeager’s sacrifice in Attack on Titan Final Season was a heart-wrenching moment that garnered the maximum number of votes from fans for naming it the Best Drama of the year.
Horimiya: The Missing Pieces, a spin-off series depicting the daily lives of Hori and Miyamura that was missing from the first season of the anime, bagged the Best Romance trophy. The Best Slice-of-Life award went to Bocchi the Rock, while the Best Original Anime trophy was clinched by Buddy Daddies.
The awards show, held at the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa in Tokyo, aired live on the official website of Crunchyroll and was available to stream on YouTube and Twitch later on. Japanese presenter Jon Kabira and voice actress Sally Amaki hosted the event.
