Actor Ralph Fiennes steps into the shoes of a cardinal entrusted with papal election in the trailer of Conclave, dropped by Focus Features on Thursday.

Helmed by Edward Berger, who won an Oscar for All Quiet on the Western Front, the movie is an adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel of the same name.

“The pope is dead. The throne is vacant. CONCLAVE is only in theaters this November, starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini. Watch the trailer now,” Focus Features wrote on X alongside the two-and-a-half-minute long trailer.

Conclave is set within the Vatican and follows the events after the sudden death of the Pope. The story revolves around the intricate process of electing a new Pope. Ralph Fiennes portrays Cardinal Lawrence, who oversees this ancient tradition. Stanley Tucci plays the reformist Cardinal Bellini, who is vying for the papacy against John Lithgow's conservative Cardinal Tremblay.

Isabella Rossellini steps into the shoes of Sister Agnes, a key figure in the election. The supporting cast includes Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, Lucian Msamati as Cardinal Adeyemi, Brian F. O’Byrne as O’Malley, and Carlos Diehz.

Volker Bertelmann, who won an Oscar for All Quiet on the Western Front, reunites with Berger for the score. Stéphane Fontaine is the cinematographer and Suzie Davies is the production designer of the upcoming film.

The official logline of the film reads, “Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church.”

Conclave will have a limited release in theatres on November 1.
