30th Critics' Choice Awards: Conclave and Wicked get 11 nods; All We Imagine as Light in fray for best foreign language film

The upcoming awards ceremony will be available for streaming live on Lionsgate Play in India on January 13 from 5.30 am

Edward Berger’s mystery thriller Conclave and Jonathan Murray Chu’s musical fantasy Wicked lead the charge at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards nominations with 11 nods each. Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part two follow close behind with 10 nominations each.

Based on the eponymous 2016 novel by Robert Harris, Conclave follows Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) as he uncovers dark secrets of the clergy. The film has been nominated for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best production design, best costume design and best score at the upcoming 30th edition of the Critics' Choice Awards. While Finnes has bagged a nomination for best actor, Isabella Rossellini’s stellar performance in the film has earned her a nomination for best supporting actress.

Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Wicked has been nominated for best picture, best acting, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best hair and makeup and best visual effects. Chu, Erivo and Grande have also been nominated for best director, best actress and best supporting actress, respectively.

Audiard’s 2024 Spanish musical crime film Emilia Pérez has earned him a nod in the best director category. Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the titular role in the film, has been nominated for the best actress award.

While Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya received no nominations for Dune: Part two, the sci-fi film’s helmer Villeneuve has been recognised with a best director nod. The film has also been nominated for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best production design, best editing, best costume design, best hair and makeup, best visual effects and best score at the annual awards ceremony.

Meanwhile, Chalamet received the best actor nod for his performance in the James Mangold-helmed Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which has also been nominated for the best picture award. Edward Norton has been nominated for best supporting actor for his role in the film.

While Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist received nine nods, including best picture, best actor, best supporting actor, best director and best original screenplay nominations, the Demi Moore-led satirical horror film The Substance earned seven nods, including one for Moore in the best actress category.

Sean Baker’s Anora tied with The Substance with seven nominations at the upcoming 30th annual Critics’ Choice Awards. RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys and Greg Kwedar Sing Sing earned five nominations, while Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu received four nods. Luca Guadagnino’s romantic sports drama Challengers, starring Zendaya and Josh O'Connor also secured four nods, including one for screenplay writer Justin Kuritzkes.

Denzel Washington was nominated in the best supporting actor category for his performance in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, fronted by Paul Mescal. The historical epic received three other nominations at the upcoming awards ceremony.

MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which emerged as the 20th-highest-grossing film of all time with a worldwide collection of USD 1.33 billion, earned a nomination for best comedy film. The Shawn Levy directorial starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman was released theatrically on July 26.

Another notable nomination was Pixar's Inside Out 2, which is up for best animated feature. Payal Kapadia’s multiple award-winning Malayalam drama All We Imagine as Light, which recently received two Golden Globe nods, has been nominated for best foreign language film.

Other highlights include Alyla Browne nomination for best young actor/actress for the film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Actress-singer Selena Gomez has also bagged a nomination in the best song category for the song Mi Camino from the film Emilia Pérez.

Recently, singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus announced on social media that her new single Beautiful That Way, recorded for Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl, has been nominated for best song category at both the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. Cyrus co-wrote the song with Lykke Li and Andrew Wyatt who also produced the track.
