The newest track from Coke Studio Bangla Season 2 is a modern celebratory qawwali that marks the debut of Kolkata-based poet Srjato Bandyopadhyay in the project as one of its lyricists.
Released on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, Dewana showcases a talented group of musicians. The ensemble consists of Soumyadeep Sikdar — also known as Murshidabadi, who became popular by singing the Lalon Fakir song Shob Lokey Koy in Season 1 — Shuchona Shely and Tasfia Fatima (Tashfee) of Lilabali fame. Ripon Kumar Sarkar (Boga), Sunidhi Nayak, Rubayat Rehman and Jannatul Firdous Akbar lent their voices as back-up vocals for the song.
While the previous number from Coke Studio Bangla Season 2, Kotha Koiyo Na, was a melodic love ballad, Dewana takes the traditional qawwali themes of an individual’s love and longing for the divine and gives it a modern, peppy soundscape.
Srijato has written the lyrics for Kon Shei Ashiq, while the portion Asheqjon was created and arranged by Pagol Goni Mastan, known for writing and composing qawwali songs in Bengali.
The eighth song of the second season, Dewana has been produced by Fuad Almuqtadir, who has made a mark with his work in the alternative and fusion genre of Bangladeshi music.
Dewana is an amalgamation of traditional Bangla folk music and contemporary sounds and arrangements, resulting in a captivating musical experience. The song features a range of instruments such as the khamak, dotara, guitar, saxophone, trombone and percussion.
Coke Studio Bangla Season 2 is produced and curated by Shayan Chowdhury Arnob.
