The sixth and final episode of Citadel Season 1 stitches up the many strands of the mystery around a spy gone rogue, leaving a lot to be desired. Here are the highlights of the episode ‘Secrets In Night Need Early Rain’ that lays down the ground for Season 2.

Nadia and Mason run a joint operation

The penultimate episode ended with the reveal that Nadia (Priyanka Chopra) had given birth to her and Mason’s (Richard Madden) child, Asha. The secret had made Nadia the prime suspect of being the mole who brought Citadel down.

Just minutes after the reveal, Nadia, Mason and their Citadel colleague Carter Spence (Osy Ikhile) are surrounded by Dahlia Archer’s (Lesley Manville) men who have kidnapped the now eight-year-old Asha. To save their daughter, Nadia and Mason agree to steal the cores of Russian nuclear warheads for Dahlia but the mission of course goes sideways.

Asha is rescued

Having retrieved the missile cores, the duo fly to Valencia to rescue their daughter. Nadia and Mason walk in to exchange the missile cores for Asha, while Carter takes up position as a sniper. The missile cores are useless without the password that Mason had put in, and now with his memory gone, he doesn’t know how to get past the lock. Carter finds a clear shot at the man holding Asha hostage and shoots him. Asha falls off the building but lands up in Mason’s arms.

Mason’s secrets come to light

After saving Asha, the spies are reunited with the rest of the characters at the downtrodden headquarters of what used to be Citadel. Carter finds an injection which has the backup for Mason’s memories, which come flooding back after Mason takes the jab. And the truth is uglier than Mason thought — it’s him who was the mole, but why he acted as a mole is ridiculous to say the least. For the same reason, the biggest reveal of this season — that Dahlia is Mason’s mother — cuts no ice.

While the final episode manages to wrap up the story neatly, it doesn’t match up to the expectations it had raised. Despite a runtime of 40 minutes, the episode seems too long with nothing much to offer other than predictable revelations.

The upcoming season will most likely have Mason trying to undo his involvement in the fall of Citadel and Dahlia on the run from Manticore. We will also wait to see what happens to Bernard Orlick (Stanely Tucci), who was last seen tied up and tortured by Dahlia, and where Nadia — betrayed by the man she loved — goes from here.
