With only two more episodes to go, the showrunners of Citadel have dropped more chunks of information, unravelling some of the major plot points in Episode 4. There’s insight into the history of the spy organisation Citadel as well as Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), both of whom are more than what meets the eye.
After the events of Episode 3, Nadia and Mason figure out that one of the Citadel spies, Carter Spence (Osy Ikhile), has been taken hostage at a black site facility in Morocco by the crime syndicate Manticore. They break in and the big twist comes when Carter recognises them. The story rewinds 10 years earlier, before the fall of Citadel. Here’s what happens in Episode 4.
Celeste Graham/Abigail/Brielle is a Citadel spy
Nadia Sinh brings in a tier-one spy soon after cementing her place in Citadel. It is her friend Celeste Graham (Ashleigh Cummings), the woman who we were introduced to as Mason’s wife Abigail in the first episode. Celeste — who became Abigail later after her memories were wiped off — is put on a mission to retrieve information from the Silje twin brothers, Davik and Anders (played by Roland Moller), who are developing the Oz Key – a device that can hack into an entire nation’s digital infrastructure.
Under Citadel’s supervision, Celeste assumes the alias, Brielle, and plants herself in the Silje brothers’ den by charming Anders and making him fall for her. The operation goes sideways when Brielle/Celeste fails to comply with Mason’s check-ins and is outed as a spy in the process of trying to steal the Oz Key.
Mason Kane is tough
The third episode showed Nadia’s full potential by unfurling some of her past; Mason (Richard Madden) didn’t have much to do. Episode 4 shows the man Mason was before his memories were wiped off and he became a domesticated family man. Shrewd and tactical, Mason is a spy you wouldn’t want to cross. While he has a soft corner for Nadia, he can also go to the point of breaking Celeste while interrogating her after the Oz Key mission goes awry.
Mason takes a split second decision and suggests using the backstop (the memory erasure device) on Celeste because he is sure that she is a mole. Even after Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci) tries to make him think before making the memory erasure permanent, Mason stands his ground. His reasoning, however, has more to do with his feelings for Nadia than the protection of Citadel’s secrets.
Nadia might be the mole after all
Nadia has had the ‘mole’ tag since the beginning of the series. Despite proving her worth as a badass spy, her past until now is wrapped in mystery. She is the only Citadel spy who regains her memories after backstop, and she is accused once more in Episode 4, this time by Carter who figured out that she could be a mole and Mason was trying to protect her by sacrificing Celeste.
The last two episodes are bound to explore the true purpose of Manticore, the actual identity of the spy who sold out Citadel and how the story goes forward in the other global versions. The penultimate episode of Citadel drops next Friday on Prime Video.
