Cillian Murphy is set to return as Tommy Shelby in a new Netflix movie based on the British drama series Peaky Blinders, the streamer announced on Tuesday.

“Tommy Shelby returns. A PEAKY BLINDERS FILM starring Cillian Murphy is coming to Netflix,” Netflix wrote alongside a picture showing the script of the upcoming film.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said in a statement, adding, “It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Peaky Blinders follows the rise of the Shelby family’s criminal empire, led by the cunning and ambitious Tommy, in post-World War I Birmingham. The series explores their cahooting up with rival gangs, their tie-ups with the government as well as their international interests.

Tom Harper, who directed all the episodes in the show’s first season in 2013, will helm the new film from a script by Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said in a statement.

The Peaky Blinders film will start production later this year. It will be a sequel to the six-season gangster drama series. The plot details of the upcoming film have been kept under wraps.

“I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight said. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war,” he added.
