Chris Pratt will be the voice for grumpy cat Garfield who loves lasagna and lazing in the animated film Garfield, which Sony’s Columbia Pictures will release theatrically on February 16, 2024.
The Guardians of the Galaxy actor announced it on Twitter on Thursday. “Get ready for some Garfield! Coming to theaters on President’s Day weekend 2024. Finally, a Monday you’re not going to hate! I have been deep in research on this one. Mostly eating lasagna. But also licking myself clean. LESSSGO! @GarfieldMovie,” he wrote.
Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel movies, will voice Garfield’s father Vic in the animated film. Finding Nemo writer David Reynolds has penned the script and Chicken Little filmmaker Mark Dindal is directing the film.
Previously, Bill Murray had voiced Garfield in two CGI-live-action films — Garfield in 2004 and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties in 2006.
Jim Davis created Garfield as a comic strip character in 1978, with the lazy, orange cat causing trouble for his human owner, Jon Arbuckle, and his dog, Odie. After appearing in 41 newspapers, the character grew into a cultural icon and the strip holds the record as the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.
Pratt is also likely to voice popular video game character Super Mario in an upcoming film. He has previously voice-starred in The Lego Movie films and Pixar’s Onward.
