British rock band Coldplay plan to retire after releasing their 12th studio album, their lead singer Chris Martin revealed during a conversation with Us-based People Magazine on Monday.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we're trying to improve,” Martin said in the interview.
The singer explained that the decision to limit Coldplay's discography to 12 albums was inspired by some of the band's biggest musical influences like Harry Potter, Beatles and Bob Marley.
Martin also mentioned that the decision to retire would allow his bandmates the space to pursue their interests outside the band. “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” he added.
The Coldplay helmsman, however, said though the band will retire after releasing 12 albums, the members will still collaborate on music.
Coldplay’s 10th studio album, Moon Music, will release on October 4.
Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, which has earned over USD 1 billion since March 2022, recently wrapped its European leg. The band will perform in Australia and New Zealand next month, with plans for Asia and UK concerts in 2025.
The rock band is scheduled to perform in Mumbai on January 18, 19, and 21 next year.
