Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé share their respective journeys from the locker room to the pitch at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the trailer of Netflix’s football-centric docuseries Captains of the World.

The streaming giant, in collaboration with FIFA+, is set to release the six-episode documentary on December 30.

Released on Friday, the trailer shows exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Simon Kjær — each of whom captained their respective countries during their 2022 World Cup campaign.

“From the locker room to the pitch, this docuseries offers exclusive access to all 32 teams as they fight for football glory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” reads the official description of the series.

Produced by Fulwell 73, Captains of the World serves as a follow-up to the 2022 Netflix series Captains, which chronicled the journey of players as they sought qualification for the highly anticipated World Cup held in Qatar. The series provided an unparalleled look into the lives and experiences of soccer players as they strive for success on the world’s biggest stage.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup, which took place in November and December last year, culminated in a thrilling final on December 18, 2022. Lionel Messi’s Argentina emerged victorious over Kylian Mbappé’s French squad in a tense penalty shootout. Messi, now a star player with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, was honoured with the prestigious Golden Ball, recognising him as the tournament's best overall player.

Other than Netflix, Apple TV+ has also announced a docuseries on Messi. Titled Messi's World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, it is set to premiere in February.
