The 77th Cannes Film Festival is set to open on May 14 with French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux’s latest four-part comedy The Second Act starring Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel and Raphaël Quenard, the event’s official X page announced recently.
“#LeDeuxièmeActe, new comedy by Quentin Dupieux will open #Cannes2024 in world premiere on May 14,” reads the translation of the announcement shared alongside a still from the film.
Produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi and represented internationally by Kinology, The Second Act will also release in French theatres on May 14.
“Florence wants to introduce David, the man she's madly in love with, to her father. But David isn't attracted to her and wants to throw her into the arms of his friend Willy. The characters meet in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere,” reads IMDb’s official synopsis of the film, touted as “a new mise en abyme around acting”.
Known for his surreal humour and avant-garde approach to filmmaking, Dupieux is also known for his works like Mandibles and Smoking Causes Coughing. The Second Act marks Quenard’s fourth collaboration with the French director after Mandibles, Smoking Causes Coughing and Yannick.
Backed by Chi-Fou-Mi Productions and distributed by Diaphana Distribution, The Second Act follows Smoking Causes Coughing, presented in 2022 in the Out of Competition category in the Official Selection round.
The opening ceremony of the film festival will be broadcast live on French television on May 14. Camille Cottin will serve as master of ceremony.
Apart from The Second Act, films like Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have its world premiere at the festival. Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness starring Emma Stone is also expected to be screened at the event. The full list of titles will be unveiled by Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux on April 11.
