With the resolution of the writers and actors’ strikes towards the end of 2023, many of our favourite web shows resumed production for their latest seasons, which means 2024 is going to be an absolute treat. Here are six returning international shows we are looking forward to bingeing this year.
True Detective Season 4: Night Country

After a four-year break, acclaimed anthology series True Detective is returning with Season 4, titled Night Country, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the detective duo. This time, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigate the mysterious disappearance of eight scientists from a remote research facility in Ennis, Alaska. Against the icy backdrop of the snow-clad Alaska, this season promises to be a chilling watch.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

A nostalgic favourite, Avatar: The Last Airbender — directed by M. Night Shyamalan — returns in a live-action adaptation on Netflix. The animated series had captivated us with its martial arts, elemental manipulation and storytelling. The live-action version depicts Aang’s journey as the young Avatar mastering the four elements to restore balance to a world under threat from the Fire Nation. Joined by Water tribe siblings Katara and Sokka and other memorable characters, Aang faces numerous challenges.

Doctor Who

The latest installment of Doctor Who, the iconic British science fiction series that has been produced intermittently over the past 60 years, is set to feature its first Black lead. After gaining widespread acclaim for his role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education, Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa will take the baton from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord. The cast for the 14th season also includes Jonathan Groff, Miriam Margolyes and Yasmin Finney.

Bridgerton Season 3

Get ready for more scandal, intrigue and romance as Lady Whistledown works her pen in the third season of this Regency-era drama. The focus will be on the slow burn love between Penelope Featherington/ Lady Whistledown (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Netflix recently teased us with first-look photos from the upcoming season, showcasing opulent settings, elaborate costumes and steamy chemistry between its characters that Bridgerton is known for.

Following a successful first season that broke viewing records, the moody and mysterious Wednesday Addams is set to return for a second round. You Season 5

The stalker-turned-romantic-murderer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) will be back for one final season in the series You, based on Caroline Kepnes’s novels. Season 4 ended with Joe returning to New York City, acknowledging his fundamental immorality and setting the stage for further exploration in upcoming episodes. According to the official logline, Joe has settled down with his wealthy partner Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) in the fifth season, but his past catches up with him as a familiar face reemerges.
