Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey will make a cameo appearance as Jack Maddox, Charlie Spring’s ‘Instagram-famous crush’, in Season 3 of the Netflix teen drama series Heartstopper, the streamer announced on Thursday to mark the actor’s 36th birthday.

“I’ve got someone I'd like you to say hi to... Jonathan Bailey is joining HEARTSTOPPER season 3 for a cameo as Jack Maddox, Charlie’s ig famous crush,” Netflix wrote alongside a reel featuring Bailey.

The reel shows Bailey in character, sporting a brown tweed jacket and trousers paired with brown-rimmed glasses. Bailey plays Maddox, an ‘award-winning author and mythographer’ who will be present at a book talk and signing event in the series, teases the video. With a charming smile, Maddox says ‘Hi’ as Heartstopper’s signature cartoon leaves fall from the top of the screen.

Apart from Bailey, Captain America: The First Avenger actress Hayley Atwell and Back to Black’s Eddie Marsan are also joining the cast as Nick’s Aunt Diane and Charlie’s therapist Geoff. “It’s not just Jonathan Bailey joining Heartstopper season three; we’re also welcoming Hayley Atwell as Nick’s Aunt Diane and Eddie Marsan as Charlie’s therapist Geoff,” wrote Netflix UK, with an image of the actors.

The announcements come in the wake of Heartstopper comics and show creator Alice Oseman’s revelation last month that Olivia Colman, who played Nick’s mother Sarah, would not be reprising her role in the third season.

“We tried absolutely everything we could, but it wasn’t meant to be, and that’s just the way the TV world works sometimes. We are so deeply grateful to Olivia for the stunning performance she gave to the show and wish her the absolute best,” bestselling author Oseman wrote, addressing the reasons behind Colman’s departure from the series.

Filming for Heartstopper Season 3 wrapped up in December last year, and the new eight-episode series is slated to release in October.

Adapted from Oseman’s Heartstopper comics, the Netflix show revolves around two teenagers — the high-school sweetie Charlie (Joe Locke) and his jock classmate Nick (Kit Connor) — who navigate high school and young love. After meeting for the first time when they are made to sit together in class, Charlie and Nick’s unlikely friendship turns into something more, as Charlie falls for Nick even though he thinks he does not stand a chance. Little does he know that Nick has fallen even harder for him, making for a “heartstopping” romance in the backdrop of a teenage coming-out story.
