The makeover of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton for Bridgerton Season 3 reflects their personal growth, revealed the Netflix period drama’s costume designer John Glaser and showrunner Jess Brownell in the latest promo video dropped by the streamer on Sunday.
While the change in Penelope’s wardrobe and makeup symbolises her transformation into a butterfly from a chrysalis, Colin’s “sexy pirate look” aligns with his character development, they said.
Nicola Coughlan plays Penelope and Luke Newton portrays the role of Colin in the Shondaland series.
“It felt right for there to be a makeover, but we also wanted to approach it in a fresh way. We could have done it slowly, but we quickly changed her silhouette and her colour palette. Instead of doing the makeup how we used to do in Season 2, we used all the lines to lift the cheekbones up to God,” the makers revealed, elaborating on Penelope’s transformation in the upcoming instalment of the show.
Admitting that she is nervous about the upcoming season, Coughlan said the ‘amazing’ makeover has helped her grow in confidence. Newton, too, talked about the new-found confidence of his character, saying that Colin has got some element of swagger now.
The video also captures what the cast members have to say about Coughlan’s shift from the eye-burning yellow to darker shades of green. “For me, it reminds me of a young Agatha Danbury, grasping the mettle of her own destiny,” said Adjoa Andoh, who essays the role of Lady Danbury.
With clips from the trailer, the promo video revealed how the theme of transformation is instrumental to the upcoming season, which will focus on Penelope and Colin’s blossoming love story.
“Everybody's development has been really, really good...There is a glow up for many characters who are not used to being in the centre of things,” asserts hair-and-makeup designer Erika Okvist.
Hannah Dodd, who replaces Ruby Stokes as Francesca Bridgerton in the upcoming instalment, recently announced that the makers of the show are organising a special event for fans in New York City on May 11.
The trailer for Bridgerton Season 3, dropped by Netflix on April 11, promised the return of many fan-favourite characters including Kate Bridgerton (played by Simone Ashley), Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathon Bailey), Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and the infamous gossip writer Lady Whistledown (Coughlan). It also reveals some new additions — Daniel Francis, Sam Phillips and James Phoon.
The upcoming third instalment of the Regency-era drama series includes eight episodes that are split into two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on Netflix on May 16, while the next four will debut on June 13.
Based on the eponymous eight-book series by Julia Quinn, the first season of Bridgerton explored the love story between Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and her husband Simon (Regé-Jean Page). The next instalment followed an enemies-to-lovers theme, focusing on the budding romance between Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma.
