Taylor Swift’s iconic white t-shirt from the music video of her 2008 song You Belong with Me was projected on Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night to mark the beginning of the singer-songwriter’s Eras concert tour in Brazil.
Taylor will be performing at six concerts across two cities — Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo — during her stay in Brazil.
Fans of the 33-year-old singer, also known as Swifties, had requested to acknowledge the arrival of the singer. Comparing Taylor’s popularity to that of pop-icon Michael Jackson, Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes confirmed earlier this week that a projection would be made on the massive Art Deco style monument.
The official social media page of the monument shared a video of the projection on the statue changing into the iconic T-shirt that Taylor wore in her song You Belong with Me (2008). Christ the Redeemer was seen wearing a white t-shirt with multi-colour triangle pattern, the names of major Brazilian cities written on it and a large “Welcome to Brasil” message. The 360-degree video of the statue changing the projection is set to the song You Belong with Me.
Welcoming the singer, Omar Raposo, rector of the sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, turned the projection into a fundraising opportunity for the poor and impoverished in Rio. He asked fans to donate drinking water and panettone, a kind of sweet bread, in support of local charities on the occasion of World Day of the Poor.
Following a long list of concerts in the USA, the Blank Space singer has stepped onto foreign soil with her global tour. She completed her tour in Mexico and Argentina before heading to Brazil. Her first three concerts in Brazil will take place at the Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos in Rio over this weekend. Her next three concerts will take place at Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo next weekend.
