Written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, Brahmastra: Part One — Shiva released in theatres on September 9, 2022. Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, Brahmastra revolves around a DJ named Shiva who discovers an unusual affinity with fire and realises that he possesses the ability to awaken the Brahmastra— a legendary supernatural weapon capable of annihilating the universe. Meanwhile, Junoon, the queen of dark forces, is also determined to acquire the weapon.

Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna Akkineni, Brahmastra’s production and release was delayed multiple times due to the pandemic. The film went on to earn Rs 418.8 crore at the global box office and Rs 257.44 crores in India after its release, emerging as the highest grossing Hindi film of 2022 and the fifth highest-grossing Indian film of that year. Two sequels of the film are currently in production and are slated to release in December 2026 and 2027 respectively.

Ayan had previously revealed his vision to create a fully-fledged streaming TV series for the Astraverse in a similar fashion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also expressed his wishes to develop the Astraverse into video games, virtual reality and merchandise.
