Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho will begin filming his highly-anticipated Korean animated feature involving deep sea creatures from the second half of 2024, reports Korean media outlet Daum.
The animated film marks a significant departure for the Korean filmmaker, who gained international acclaim with Parasite and Snowpiercer. It is expected to delve into the intricate relationship between marine life and humanity.
Force Creative Party, a well-known Korean VFX company with previous collaborations with Bong, will handle the full CG animation for the film.
What makes this project even more intriguing is its colossal budget — approximately USD 52 million — making it the most expensive production in Korean film history. The film, backed and distributed by CJ ENM in Korea, is reportedly in talks with Sony Pictures to secure a global release.
Bong announced that he would make the animated film soon after the success of Parasite but later shifted his attention to the production of Mickey 17. The director is expected to divide his time between Korea and the US in the coming months, navigating post-production for Mickey 17 while laying the groundwork for his foray into the world of animation.
The Korean filmmaker recently made headlines with a call for a probe by South Korean authorities into the tragic death of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who took his own life in December after facing a drug-related investigation.
