Angrezi Medium director Homi Adajania says his digital debut series Saas Bahu Aur Cocaine, about women running a cocaine cartel, is going to be “funny, gritty and extremely bold”.
He has lined up the Hotstar Original as his follow-up project to his upcoming Irrfan Khan release.
Homi, who wrote his 2006 directorial debut Being Cyrus, has penned the Hotstar show as well and said he always wanted to tell a story about women working in the drug business.
“I wanted to make a story about a bunch of women who are living in a downtrodden family and they are so much more evolved than anything around them. Even the men in the family, who are working abroad, don’t know what they are doing as they would only visit during Holi and Diwali.
“The women are running a small embroidery business but it is actually a front for their cocaine business which is the biggest in entire South Asia. They are living in a crumbling haveli in Kutch and they have everything at their disposal as they have loads of cash. The series is going to be funny, gritty and extremely bold,” Homi said.
Given the bold subject of the series, the director said he’s glad that there isn’t any censorship on the web.
“I have always had creative liberties in my movies but then I had to lock horns with censors. Just because there is no censorship on the Net, I don’t think that is the reason to go nuts,” he added.
The director disclosed he has a wishlist of actors for the project and it includes his Angrezi Medium actress Radhika Madan. “My wishlist would be Tabu and Radhika Apte as they are actors with good calibre. I want to use Madan again, she is a treasure.”
Speaking about Angrezi Medium, Homi said he has come out a better person after working with Irrfan. The time spent with the actor, he said, gave him a new perspective on life. “Angrezi Medium has changed me as a person. It has made me a better, lighter person. The way I would approach a film before, I was finicky about the actor not giving me the right pitch and things that are not in your control. All that has gone out of the window.
“I will probably make films more often now as I have realised that there is a light way of making them. One should chill, have fun, enjoy while making a movie and it will all come through. This is the way one should be,” the director added.
Irrfan has played a huge part in this transformation, Homi said. “That is the only reason to change. The resilience, strength and spirit that guy has… it was a different experience for everyone. It was a magical journey.”
